Yesterday I finished with my final of 3 SkinPen treatments at Alabama Vein Center. As I’ve continued to share about my experience on Instagram, I’ve received tons of questions about it. Because of this, I felt it would be most helpful to write a full review here on my website for your reference! To begin, if you’re wondering what exactly the SkinPen is, basically it’s a microneedling treatment to your skin using a “pen” device. To better explain I pulled the information below directly from Alabama Vein Centers website.

WHAT IS THE SKINPEN?

Alabama Vein Center is now introducing SkinPenII, a revolutionary new face and neck treatment device that uses your skin's natural ability to heal itself- all with little or no downtime! Remarkably effective for Scars: acne, trauma, surgical, and chicken pox. Fine Lines and Wrinkles as well as Large pores and Lax skin. The device itself has tiny microscopic needles that “poke life” back into aging skin.

WHY I STARTED GETTING THE SKINPEN:

I personally heard amazing things about this treatment prior to trying it out and felt it would specifically help with my acne scarring. As you guys may know, I have recently struggled with adult acne and as a result have some scarring on my face. After receiving my 3 SkinPen treatments, I can confidently say that my scarring has significantly lightened up. I’ve also noticed improvement in the tone, texture & overall look of my skin. This is definitely a direct result of the collagen stimulation created by the SkinPen treatments.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE SKINPEN:

To prepare for the skinpen, avoid blood thinners and alcohol for the 48 hours leading up to the treatment.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE? DOES IT HURT?

The entire process will take about an hour from start to finish. Prior to the treatment, your nurse will completely clean all the makeup and skincare you have off your face. Next, they will apply a numbing cream to your face and neck. After letting the numbing cream set in to full effect, it will then be washed off. After that, the actual microneedling process will begin with the nurse using the “pen” device targeting small areas until your entire face and neck have been treated (SEE FIRST PHOTO BELOW). For me, it was completely painless, but I will say I have a fairly high pain tolerance. The numbing cream really does makes it so you can barely feel anything, which is so nice. I definitely would say expect very little pain during this treatment because of the numbing cream. What you can expect is your face to feel hot, look red and irritated- This is completely normal (SEE SECOND PHOTO BELOW). But what I appreciated most about this treatment was that there was very little downtime.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT POST-TREATMENT?

Like I mentioned, your skin will heal itself very quickly, so expect very little downtime. The day you get the treatment, your skin may be red and irritated. You are not supposed to wear makeup for 24 hours or it will tattoo on your skin, so this is very important. After the procedure you will receive a box of skincare (SEE THIRD PHOTO BELOW) that will help speed up the healing of your skin. For a day or two after the treatment your skin texture may feel similar to “sandpaper” and you may experience some mild peeling, which are also both very normal! After that your skin will return to an even better version of itself and I guarantee you will be pleased with the results! In conclusion, I highly recommend this treatment and think it’s definitely worth considering!
